Our Story
It starts with a little girl sitting next to her great grandfather, Miyaan’ji on his charpoi, as people gather in the courtyard to address the matter of a stolen water buffalo. The children join in to watch. With the owners on one side, and those accused of stealing on the other side, and other members of the community attending; some out of curiosity, some to express their frustrations about the conflict, and some to support one of the parties.
So do the accused. As do all attending community members. As hours and days go by, they all tell intricate stories to make their arguments. They cry, they shout, they animate, they pace as they tell.
Cardamom chai with sweet rusks, biscuits, and sweets are served every couple of hours. At night, everyone retreats to the rooftops to sleep on one of the many charpois laid out under the stars. Eventually, on day three the owners express what they think the punishment ought to be. Miyaan’ji invites all in attendance to speak to the fairness of the punishment, including the accused.
On day four, empathy, compassion, and need for community cohesion prevail. Hands are shaken, and Miyaan’ji reminds everyone that we must continue to respect each other, act with integrity, and reciprocate with kindness so all the little ones watching can learn.
Kahanee’s journey is a journey celebrating the ancient art of storytelling. Stories bring people together. Stories can induce pain, fear, anger but also awe, joy, and gratitude. Stories can heal. Stories can create hope, possibility, and renewal. Stories can build peace.
